What is the cause of sleep apnea?
It occurs when a person experiences an interruption in breathing during sleep. Several things can be considered a cause though. Some people may experience a relaxing of the tongue and throat muscles during sleep, which will partially block the airway opening. The muscles at the base of the tongue and the uvula relax and cause the airway to become blocked. When the airway is blocked a persons breathing becomes difficult and noisy and in the case of sleep apnea can stop altogether. The uvula is the small fleshy piece of tissue hanging from the back of a person’s throat.
Obesity is also a sleep apnea cause. Overweight people can have excess amount of tissue in their airway thus causing it to narrow. The problem then is that the person continues to try to breathe normally but air cannot flow in or out of their nose or mouth. Since the person is sleeping, they do not know that they are now snoring heavily or experiencing periods of no breathing. The person will also frequently wake and frequently move from a deep sleep to a light sleep. Consumption of alcohol and sleeping pills will increase the possible frequency and the length of time of the breathing pauses for a person with sleep apnea.
When suffering from sleep apnea a person cannot breathe in oxygen and thus they are also unable to exhale carbon dioxide which then results in the individual receiving low levels of oxygen and higher levels of carbon dioxide in the their blood. These two events alert the brain to resume breathing and cause an arousal. The arousal is a signal that the brain sends to the upper airway muscles to open the airway. This opening of the airway causes the person to gasp or snort aloud. These frequent periods of waking really prevent the sleep apnea sufferer from getting a restful night sleep.
It is not clearly known whether sleep apnea causes other conditions such as high blood pressure but a study concluded that up to fifty percent of sufferers do have high blood pressure. However, these results certainly lead to the idea that this sleep disorder may cause high blood pressure. People with this type of sleep disorder quite often feel very sleepy during the day due to their interrupted sleep.
Sleep apnea can cause depression, irritability, sexual problems, learning and memory issues as well. A sufferers spouse is usually the first person that notices a problem. They may notice loud snoring and a struggle to breathe during the night.

There are many valid reasons to get snoring cured. Snoring results in interrupted sleep, poor rest, and awakening still feeling tired. Daily energy levels suffer, thus your daily activities suffer’not to mention how it affects others annoyed by your snoring.

Do you think home remedies for snoring are the solution to help you sleep better?
Have you been living with someone that snores heavily at night? If you have answered yes to the last question I bet you are actively looking for a solution that could help you sleep better at night. A solution that could make your partner stops snoring once and for all. Well there is some good news for you. Home remedies for snoring have been proven to be quite effective the only trick is, you need to find the one that works for your partner. This is just a matter of trial and error; I will do my best to help you understand the various home remedies to stop snoring so you can make an informed choice.
Can a Tennis ball be a Home Remedy for Snoring?
This home remedy for snoring is a little bit unusual and is not for everyone but still it is worth mentioning. First you will need to find out if your partner is snoring less when he his sleeping on the side. If he snores as much when he is sleeping on the side as when he is sleeping on the back, this home remedy won’t help you. In the other case this could be worth trying. You should purchase a tennis ball and sew it into the back of the pajamas he is wearing at night. This will make sure to keep your partner sleeping on his side as the ball will create a discomfort when they roll on their back forcing them to return to their side and maintain a position where they snore less. The idea behind this home remedy for snoring is to modify the sleeping style of your partners, over time his habits will change and the tennis ball will no longer be required
Your Pillow Can Be Part of the Problem
Studies on snoring have proven that often pillows are responsible for enhancing your snoring problem. Pillows often place a kink in your neck that can cause anyone to snore. So If you have snoring problems, your pillow can only make your snore louder. A quick home remedy for snoring would be to try for at least a couple of nights to simply sleep without your pillow and thus preventing that initial kink in your neck.
The Head of your Bed
Another suggestion in home remedies for snoring would be to try and elevate the head of your bed. This simple solution can often help reduce your snoring problem, simply put the two feet of the bed on bricks or another supportive product. This type of solution can also be helpful for people suffering from congestion, cold or allergies during the night. Elevating your bed head will help prevent the nasal airways to become congested during your sleep and thus reduce your snoring.

Obesity and sleep disorders:
Being overweight and sleeping has close links as well as inter-dependency on each other. It is said that the less we sleep the more we are at the risk of getting obesity. A recent study conducted in this regard reveals that the number of hours slept has an influence on the risk of obesity. It is also known that obesity is a major factor in sleep apnea, and is often listed as one of the main causes. Sleep apnea is one of the major sleep disorders that causes sleep deprivation, and, of course, the more sleep deprived a person becomes, the less active he or she is. However there are many reasons that we need before we realize the importance of sleep in our lives. Anything less than the seven to nine hours’ sleep we need is asking for trouble that can literally impact our lives. Even it could lead to a loss of physical and mental health, to poor memory, poor coordination, and now, to weight gain and obesity.
How to control weight:
Obesity is a disease of excess body fat that can be characterized by a body mass index of 30+ - and the risk factors and contributory causes include a range of well-documented genetic and environmental factors. However the relative effect of these causes on the development of obesity remains unclear. Prior to any examinations it should be noted that obesity, especially severe clinical obesity like morbid or malignant obesity, carries greater risks of morbidity and premature mortality than simple overweight. In such cases it is commonly found out that excess body fat on the neck and chest constricts the air-passageways and sometimes the lungs. Obesity, particularly in the abdominal parts and upper body obesity, is the most significant risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea. The relation is direct, the more obese a person, the greater the risk of apnea. Hence, it can be concluded that morbid or malignant obesity carries a greater risk. Significantly, weight loss reduces sleep apnea as it leads to a significant improvement in symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. Even the modest weight reduction can help get the condition under control.

Entering parenthood for the first time is a sweet but challenging experience. Among many disadvantages and discomforts of new parenthood, the most talked about and difficult to be dealt with are problems related with sleep. This is inter related problem. One, which is in relation with the child’s problems of sleep patterns and the sleep patterns of the parent. Simply put, the child does not sleep at expected times, neither can the parent when he or she needs to.
Strategies to maximize one’s opportunities to sleep
1) Ensure that the child gets enough sleep at regular intervals so that she is not cranky through the waking up time. This relaxes the parent and she can associate pleasure with bringing up her baby. She can even sleep peacefully.
2) Use the power of daylight to reset the child’s sleep wake clock. Show her daylight once she wakes up in the morning. Her body clock will adjust her to sleep at night and stay up in the day. Teach the baby to distinguish between night and day.
3) Try to tune oneself to the baby’s cries at night. One single cry should not baffle the parent and make her jump out of bed immediately.
4) Teach the child to soothe himself back to sleep on his own once he wakes up in the middle of the night. Teaching the child can encourage this to fall asleep on his own, to start with.
5) Do not try over the counter drugs to for sleep deprivation. Instead, plan for the night throughout the day. Eating a healthy diet, getting exercise, exposure to natural light, a comfortable atmosphere will affect how well a child sleeps. She sleeps through the night, the mother does so too.
6) Try a yoga routine before going to bed. Do the stand up stretch. Stand with both legs apart. Clasp your hands and stretch them above the head. Stand on the toes and stretch and then bend to each side as long as one can hold.
7) The most common solution “ sleep while the baby sleeps” may not be the easiest solution. A mother might have to finish other household chores or catch up with unfinished deadlines. Thus it is better to work towards getting a peaceful sleep routine.

Sleep is an essential factor to our daily existence. We need a minimum of 6-8 hours of sleep per day in order to function to our optimum level. Without this stipulated time, we feel drowsy and our reflexes might not be as quick as they are supposed to if we do not spend enough time in relaxing our brains and our central nervous system which is at a continuous level of alertness when we are awake.
There can be a variety of reasons for which we will not be able to get that much required sleep. The reasons might range from more complex reasons such as insomnia to more general reasons such as anxieties, emotional problems, etc. These might be some of the leading reasons as to why we are not able to sleep. However, there is another cause that is often overlooked as a cause of loss of sleep. That factor is an uncomfortable bed that you sleep on.
Essential requirements of an ideal bed
The best variety of beds are those that are neither too soft nor are they too hard. Hardness might cause stiffness for the joints whereas an excessively soft surface will not help to tone the muscles in any way while you are asleep. The latest technology for comfortable beds includes airbeds. These beds are designed with vulcanized rubber air chambers that provide support as well as well as the right amount of comfort. This creates a firm foundation for you to rest upon. Other options include a waterbed.
