The side effects one finds quoted for green tea are generally minor. They can form a long list but are really little different from the side effects you would associate with drinking any tea or any beverage that has caffeine and/or acts as a diuretic. For example, you might find that consumption close to bedtime will not help insomnia if you are prone to that. As a diuretic it will aggravate urge incontinence. Excessive consumption of green tea may also increase the amount of stomach acid. The tannin content in green tea might bring about constipation and a rise in blood pressure and possibly heart rate and increased blood sugar. It all sounds most alarming when you list all the possibilities, but many of these factors could be the consequence of other factors in your diet. Reports of heartburn, upset stomach, irritability, headache, constipation, diarrhea and so on are things that most of us experience from time to time and could be the result of the many different factors that constitute our total diet. Of course regular consumption of massive doses of green tea – or any tea for that matter – will result in caffeine dependency and eventual toxicity and will lead to other psychological problems. All of that has to be put into perspective, however. The caffeine content of green tea is relatively low, certainly much less than in coffee, and less than most other teas. You would really have to drinking abnormal quantities of it to end up with caffeine dependency, much more than you need to derive the benefit of its anti-oxidant properties. When you weigh up that against the consistently reported benefits such as prevention of certain types of cancers, reduced the risk of heart diseases and lowering of total cholesterol levels together with improvement in the ratio of good and the bad cholesterol. Add to this reports of its effectiveness as an alternative to other weight loss products by increasing metabolism without over stimulating the adrenal glands, and, of course, its anti-oxidant properties it is clear that the consumption of green in sensible, non excessive doses provides significant net improvement to our well-being. Having said that, however, some reports discourage the consumption of green tea, certainly in large quantities, by women in the early stages of pregnancy, as the tannin, caffeine and catechins in green tea increase risk of miscarriage and neural birth defect in babies. Also high levels of caffeine have been linked to fertility problems.

Green Tea is fast becoming the tea of choice as one of several herbal tea remedies. Well known for its antioxidant properties, it also has anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties as well. Continuing research on the beneficial properties of green tea to human health has produced several new findings. “Most notable is a study by Japanese scientists of the Saitama Cancer Research Institute relating the delay of cancer onset with the consumption of green tea. The study shows that early stage breast cancer spreads less rapidly in women with a history of drinking five or more cups of green tea a day. As a result, there is a lower recurrence rate and a longer disease-free period.”
Green tea antioxidants have been shown to have a direct effect on lowering cholesterol levels as well. Green tea also causes carbohydrates to be released slowly, preventing sharp increases in blood-insulin levels. This promotes the burning of fat. Many scientists believe there is a connection between all of the components of green tea; and these combined properties account for its health-enhancing properties. Unfermented green tea leaves, by the way, are the most natural way to gain these benefits.
Did you know that green tea can even help prevent tooth decay? Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria, which causes dental plaque. On another front, skin treatments containing green tea from deodorants to creams are starting to appear on the market. For those of you who have been drinking green tea for some time; good for you!

Probably, but be careful. Many women avoid all drugs during pregnancy, including caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and prescription and over-the-counter medicines, but then think nothing of drinking cup after cup of herbal tea.
Certain herbal teas can be very beneficial in pregnancy and may help to alleviate some of the symptoms of pregnancy. Many women find that small amounts of ginger tea can help with morning sickness, while peppermint tea can ease heartburn and indigestion. Slippery elm or meadowsweet tea may also aid digestion. However, it is always a good idea to drink herbal teas in moderation.
Generally speaking, any herb which is considered fine for food use is presumed to be safe for teas as well. All herbal preparations which are bought as tea bags from the supermarket are thought to be safe for use in pregnancy. You can also buy herbal tea blends specifically made for drinking when you are pregnant.
It is important to steer clear of unfamiliar ingredients (such as black cohosh, pennyroyal, and mugwort, all best avoided during pregnancy). Other herbs to avoid in pregnancy include celery, parsley and sage (the latter should also be avoided if you are breastfeeding, as it may reduce milk supply). Never make a tea from any plant in your own garden, unless you’re 100 per cent sure what it is and that you can safely take it while you’re pregnant
